Grinding multiplies a bean's surface area by orders of magnitude, so volatile aromatics off-gas within minutes and oxidation accelerates staling. That is the central challenge of pre-ground coffee. Prioritize roasters who flush their bags with nitrogen and use one-way degassing valves to halt oxidation, buy smaller quantities, seal them airtight, and use them quickly. Match the grind to your method, since a single grind cannot be optimal everywhere.
A medium grind, similar to coarse sand. It balances flow rate and extraction for the contact time a drip brewer provides.
