The process, step by step
- We buy at retail. Products are purchased the same way you'd buy them — no press samples with strings attached, no early units cherry-picked by a brand.
- Coffee is cupped blind. Beans and grounds are tasted side-by-side against the rest of their category before we look at price, brand, or packaging.
- Gear earns its score over weeks, not hours. Machines, grinders and accessories go through repeated daily sessions so consistency problems have time to show up.
- Scores map to a public rubric. Each of the five graded criteria and its exact weight is documented on How We Rank — the same math applies to a $9 bag and a $900 machine.
- Reviews get re-checked. Prices, availability, and community ratings refresh regularly, and a score is revisited whenever a product is reformulated or updated.
